Will DMAE Help Me Study?
Q I am a 22 year old student and though considered intelligent and sometimes even
"intellectual" (often with a sneer; we are not a loved lot), I do have some attention deficiency
and tend to drift off when I try to study my material, even if I am interested. Now I know that
thousands of factors and variables play into this issue, but what would you guys recommend for
the quick fix before the study session or even the exam? And as far as long term is concerned,
is DMAE a potential solution?

A There is,
as of yet, no "quick fix" to replace good old-fashioned studying. But there are supplements that
may enhance your memory functions in the short, medium and long term.
Phenylalanine is an
amino acid precursor, a chemical building block, to the neurotransmitter noradrenaline.
Increased levels of this and other neurotransmitters in the brain can help improve certain
cognitive functions such as enhanced mental alertness, more energy, creativity, data aquisition
and retention. Phenylalanine with cofactors can be found in Life Enhancement's
Ascend 'n See (also containing polyphenol-rich green tea) or BLAST (also containing
caffeine). Either of these items can be taken regularly or on an as-needed basis.
Choline
along with specific cofactors in Memory Upgrade has been found to enhance memory function,
including an increased ability to focus. I would suggest taking it on a regular basis. Choline
is the precursor of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in the
central nervous system. Choline increases the amount of acetylcholine, a normal, natural and
necessary neurotransmitter in the brain, adequate amounts of which are associated with improved
performance by normal, healthy individuals in a variety of intelligence and memory tests.
DMAE is normally present in small amounts in our brains. When supplemental amounts are
used, DMAE is known for its remarkable brain-function enhancement effects. DMAE is
a naturally occurring nutrient found in seafood. Perhaps this is why fish have often been called
brain food. Throughout the scientific literature, DMAE has been found to help elevate
mood, improve memory and learning, increase intelligence, increase physical energy, and in one
study extended the life span of laboratory animals. Life Enhancement's DMAE comes in
125 mg capsules and for your particular interests it is something you might want to take on a
regular basis.
