Q Dear Dr. V,
A galantamine supplement is too expensive for us elderly. What do you suggest?

A Dear GE,
Galantamine is extracted from certain flowers - mainly snowdrops and daffodils - and it takes huge quantities of them to get a small amount of this precious substance. The processing costs are formidable. In European countries, galantamine is available by prescription only and costs about three to four times, at discount prices, what it costs to obtain the same amount in the United States.

When you take all these things into consideration, galantamine doesn't seem that expensive. But I understand how difficult it is these days for the elderly to live on a fixed income, and I wish the production costs for galantamine were lower. You may want to consider purchasing a smaller bottle (now available) as a trial to see how it works for you.

Take care.
