Taking Galantamine with Prescription Drug
Dear Dr. V,
I am taking Aricept for mild memory problems. Is it OK to take galantamine with it?
Vincent
Flushing, New York

A Dear Vincent,
The prescription drug Aricept (donepezil) is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, as is the chemical compound galantamine, which is derived from certain flowering plants, such as the snowdrop, daffodil, and spider lily. There is significant evidence that galantamine may be more effective than donepezil and similar prescription drugs, without the side effects of the drugs.

A number of studies have shown the benefits of switching from donepezil or similar drugs to galantamine. It would be best, however, to work with your physician when making the switch to galantamine or when adding galantamine to your existing regimen. In either case, your physician may want to make the change gradually, ensuring proper amounts, and the scientific literature contains protocols for doing just that.
