Galantamine for Prophylaxis

Q I would like to use galantamine as prophylaxis against Alzheimer’s disease. Are there any conflicts with lorazepam 10 mg/day, which I need to take, and sundry nutrients, including amino acids and especially tryptophan, which I take 3 g/day?

Marcus, London, UK

A There are no known interactions between galantamine and the antianxiety agent lorazepam (a benzodiazepine drug), or between galantamine and tryptophan or any other amino acids or nutrients.

However, there is a possibility that drugs that increase the bioavailability of galantamine may represent a problem. Among such drugs, from least to greatest possible interference, are the antibiotic erythromycin, the gastric acid secretion inhibitor cimetidine, the antifungal ketoconazole, and the SSRI antidepressant paroxetine. It is always best to consult with your doctor.
