The Value of Natural Thyroid

Q I’ve suffered from chronic anemia most of my life. General iron pills don’t work. And now that my thyroid is oblated and I’m into menopause, what do you recommend to improve my immune metabolism and especially iron levels, without any animal products? Other symptoms: have always been thin but now can’t lose extra weight. I take an herb formulation, but this takes care of hot flashes only. I also take a generic synthroid; and most importantly I have all the usual symptoms of low iron (walking problems, memory, hair, etc).

A Unfortunately, we know of no non-animal products that can achieve your goals. Thyroid levels tend to decrease with age in many women (and men as well). With even subnormal levels of thyroid hormones, however—let alone low levels—you could still feel pretty bad. The most common symptoms are dry skin, fatigue, dulling of mental faculties, depression, weight gain, constipation, aching joints, low blood pressure, high cholesterol, low libido, brittle nails, hair loss, and sensitivity to cold. However, natural thyroid (animal derived) can arrest many of these problems, because the natural form has a full array of the thyroid hormones: T1, T2, T3, and T4, while the synthetic does not. While natural thyroid is not a “magic bullet,” many women report significant relief and other benefits. This is true for many men too!
