Berberine Overturns Menopause Comorbidities

A new review describes the cellular and clinical effects associated with the use of the nutritional supplement berberine. The review scientists found abundant evidence showing that berberine is beneficial for the full range of lifestyle changes and concomitant diseases that appear frequently as women enter perimenopause, and move closer to menopause.

Among the perimenopausal challenges are overweight and obesity and many comorbidities that lead to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in women after menopause and 56% of all causes of death in Western European countries. With increasing lifespans, women spend approximately one-third of their lifetime in postmenopausal state. Consequently, the development of new strategies to improve the prevention and treatment of menopause-associated pathologies is important topic in clinical practice, especially involving nutritional applications.
