Galantamine Inhibits Diabetes

In a new study, researchers have found that the natural plant extract galantamine has antidiabetic effects. The study was conducted at several Egyptian Universities where scientists unveiled the possible mechanisms and evaluated galantamine’s interaction with an oral anti-hyperglycemic agent (anti-diabetic drug) shown to reduce hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Galantamine worked as well or better than the drug, and when combined there was a synergistic effect. However, the drug has many adverse effects and thus is not a welcome add-on to galantamine therapy. It is curious to note that Alzheimer’s disease has often been thought to be a form of diabetes (type 3) so the ability of to smite both diseases at the same time is readily plausible.
