Mind Boosters. Ray Sahelian, M.D. St. Martin's Griffin, New York, 2000. Paperback, 300 pp., $14.95.

Enter the mind of Ray Sahelian, M.D., by reading his new book, Mind Boosters, and be prepared for a cognitive treat. This book is not like anything else you've read on this subject, because it is, by and large, a first-hand account of so-called smart nutrients. It is not a rehash of the studies, with their often flat and predictable, technotalk, pigeonhole conclusions. Unlike the conventional medical community - and, dare I say, too much of the alternative one - Dr. Sahelian prefers to experience directly the nutrient mind boosters he endorses. And although he makes the point that less is sometimes more, especially when combining different supplements, Dr. Sahelian has often dosed himself to a much higher level of booster than even many long-time afficionados would, so that he "gets" it, i.e., so that he personally experiences just what a mind booster can do.

As he writes in his new book, "I have become an expert in noticing subtle changes in mood, alertness, vision, and other senses." Shades of Alexander and Ann Shulgin, the psychedelic researchers, who have placed themselves at the center of their own laboratory in delving into the "lunar" aspect of consciousness. Less daring, but much more practical for most of us, Dr. Sahelian visits the "solar" aspect of his conscious mind, the part that delights in illumination by reason, reading, exploration, writing, creativity, solving, and invention, to name a few of the higher reaches of the mind.

For readers of Life Enhancement, there are not too many surprises in Dr. Sahelian's choices of cognitive nutrients. However, his conclusions are always a pleasure and are bound to help us make more informed and productive choices in designing our own brain-supplement programs. Buy this book. You will not be disappointed.
