Vitamin E Extends Lifespan
9/12/2005Countless scientific studies tell us how vitamin E, the powerful antioxidant, counters the propagation of free radical reactions that damage lipids and proteins and constitute a major factor in aging. Taken in appropriate quantities, vitamin E can go a long way toward preventing, or at least putting the brakes on, the progressive degeneration of heart disease, cancer, dementia, and the like that ultimately get us in the end. Now, a new study demonstrates for the first time that supplemental a-tocopherol, the most useful form of vitamin E in the human body, can help significantly extend lifespan.

Coalition commences national petition campaign to end FDA and FTC censorship of health information
9/26/2005Today at the National Press Club, four representatives of a coalition of 28 dietary supplement companies, public interest groups, and supplement distributors announced the commencement of a national grass-roots campaign to end FDA and FTC censorship of health information. They said that the day before, after a Capitol Hill briefing on the subject, the Liberty Caucus, comprised of 24 members of Congress, endorsed the initiative and its members would be among those cosponsoring a bill to open the marketplace to accurate nutrient-disease information.

Calcium Phosphate Reduces Cholesterol Levels
7/25/2005Ever since we were kids, we've known that calcium was a very important nutrient, with a wide range of activity in virtually all body systems. Even the FDA, in its wisdom, has seen fit to allow efficacy claims for only three nutrient supplements, of which calcium as the first — for reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

Resveratrol Protects Against Flu Virus
6/27/2005Each fall, as flu season approaches, we are treated to a new round of scare stories about potential epidemics and pandemics of influenza. Ordinary flu kills 36,000 Americans each year, but a pandemic (a worldwide outbreak), should it occur, could kill more than 10 times that number and cause unprecedented social disruption and economic loss.

Homocysteine Levels Linked to Cognition Deficits:
How Folate and Choline Help Keep You Sharp
5/9/2005Homocysteine excess in the blood is widely recognized today as a primary risk factor for cardiovascular disease. While not yet as well appreciated by mainstream medicine as cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, smoking, and "couch potato-itis," high levels of the amino acid homocysteine appear to be at least as great a danger for causing heart attacks and strokes.

Results of Major New Meta-Analysis Confirm Policosanol for Cholesterol Control: The Obvious Choice
4/18/2005

People concerned with their cholesterol (Who isn't?) got some good news earlier this year. A major meta-analysis of natural anti-cholesterol therapies, published in the journal Pharmacotherapy, found that the sugarcane derivative policosanol was far superior for controlling cholesterol to standard dietary modification and plant sterols and stanols (found in certain vegetable oils, margarines and other foods).

Build Strong Bones With Folate and Vitamin B12
3/21/2005No doubt about it, aging takes its toll on the body. Like the plumbing in an old house, the cardiovascular system stiffens and clogs, until one day the heart stops or the brain strokes; the mind "fades" as the death of irreplaceable brain cells accelerates; bones thin, weaken, and eventually fracture. These are just some of the extremely complex, degenerative processes that take place as we age, but different as they are, they all have one theme in common: elevated levels of the amino acid homocysteine.

Arginine: Lowers Blood Pressure, Improves Brain Function in the Elderly
3/1/2005New research shows that reducing blood pressure can improve blood flow to the brain and, in so doing, improve impaired cognitive performance. While this is certainly good news, antihypertensive drugs are often associated with dangerous side effects. Taking supplements of arginine has been shown to control blood pressure safely, effectively, and naturally.

Spanish Sage Enhances Memory, Improves Mood
2/1/2005The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of the herb sage places it in a different class from conventional anticholinesterase drugs. While its AChE inhibition may improve age-related memory deficits, sage’s other activities may actually help prevent Alzheimer’s disease, especially when we start using it at a young age. Sage’s ability to enhance mood as well as memory also sets it apart, making it valuable for people who want to preserve their cognitive function into old age.
