The Best Present for Yourself
One of my fond childhood memories is that whenever we had guests over for dinner, my father would always offer his favorite toast, the famous Spanish one: Salud, amor, y pesetas—y el tiempo para gozarlas. (May you have) Health, love, and wealth—and the time in which to enjoy them.
It is appropriate that the most important of this triumvirate comes first—health.
When we are young, it is easy to take natural good health and vitality for granted—and it becomes progressively less easy as we get old. Which it is why it is wise to start preserving one’s health when young (just as it is wise then to start saving money).
I’m 65 now and as you know, 12 days ago (12/05) underwent serious abdominal surgery. My doctors are amazed at how rapidly I am recuperating. One reason for this is that I have taken nutritional supplements in “life extension” amounts for over 30 years. Another is that I am taking specific nutritional formulas to promote [natural revitalization functions].*
Almost exclusively, they are formulas designed by famed life extension scientists Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw—dear friends for 40 years—and produced by our mutual friend Will Block’s company Life Enhancement.
I think that such nutrition is the best Christmas present you could give to yourself.
Of course, you could trot down to your local GNC, which I don’t doubt is a fine company. But what Life Enhancement offers is absolutely cutting-edge life-extension nutrition, quality-control I absolutely trust—and their magazine/website explains it all clearly with scientific references.
Durk & Sandy’s latest formula, FoldRight, is an example. Almost everything our body does involves proteins. Almost all of the 25,000 genes in our DNA code for the production of a protein. All enzymes are proteins, etc. Proteins are enormously complicated, and critical to their proper functioning is that they fold into a correct three-dimensional structure.
One major cause of aging is that the proteins in our body become progressively mis-folded. It’s like keys no longer fitting into locks. That’s why one (not the only) holy grail of life extension science is to figure out how to start re-folding our body’s mis-folded proteins back to their correct structures. FoldRight is that Holy Grail.
That’s brand new. I’ve been taking Durk & Sandy’s arginine-based formula, InnerPower, for a quarter-century. I never go without it anywhere in the world, as it promotes [natural revitalization functions]* (as well as many other things—it’s sort of a nutritional philosopher’s stone).
Then there’s their original life extension vitamin/supplement formula, Personal Radical Shield. Back in the 70s, before their formulas were commercially available, they would put together their basic life extension mix in their lab (I often got to be their lab assistant!). We didn’t have encapsulation equipment, so we’d carry the stuff around in plastic bags, taking a teaspoon of vitamin powder straight with each meal. You have no idea how awful it tasted.
This went on for years. Can you imagine lugging around large bags of vitamin powders in say, Afghanistan fighting with the Mujahaddin against the Soviets? Good grief. Finally Will came along to make a business out of it and license/manufacture Durk & Sandy’s formulas.
I don’t think you could make a better investment in yourself, give yourself a better Christmas present, than to explore the Life Enhancement site (be sure and click on the “Articles & Research About This Product” link for each formula), order the formulas you feel would be right for you, and start actually slowing down the aging process in your body.
[I should now make this disclaimer: I have no financial interest in Life Enhancement whatever.]

Over the last twelve years,
lifting weights (especially training the three power lifts: the squat,
bench press and deadlift) as well as eating the right foods and taking
the right supplements, many of which are Life Enhancement's supplements,
has helped me to overcome many obstacles. But the greatest obstacle these
things helped me to overcome was my cancer. Today I am a happy person and
I really enjoy every day, something that many people on this planet don't
seem to be able to do too easily. My
name is Stephan Korte, I am 27 years old and I am originally from Germany.
Today I live in Salzburg, Austria. I am 6'1” tall and I currently weigh
276 lbs. I've been pretty successful as a power lifter in the teenage and
junior divisions. As a junior I won a silver medal at the IPE Junior World
Championships in Sydney in 1992. In 1993 I won the EPF Junior European
Championships in the 275's. I had to discontinue competing in power lifting
in 1993 due to a severe illness. I had cancer, testicular cancer. Here
is what happened.
It was about one month prior to the 1993 Junior
European Championships in power lifting in April 1993 when I detected a
lump on my right testicle. I weighed around 260 lbs then and I was in my
best shape ever. But, from that day on, my physical condition got worse
week by week. I lost body weight and got weaker. One of my friends, who
was in medical school at that time, told me to see a doctor because a swollen
lump on the testicle could be cancer. I did not see a doctor because I
was scared that he would tell me that I could not lift at the Europeans.
I wanted to compete and win the gold medal so badly that I didn't see a
doctor. I lost almost 20 lbs of bodyweight before the European Championships
and I felt I was getting weaker. But I was still strong enough to win.
I reached my goal.
I went to a hospital the day after the competition
and the diagnosis was testicular cancer. I had surgery the next morning.
They removed my right testicle. Two weeks after that I had another surgery
to remove the lymph-nodes out of my abdomen. Six weeks after that I started
my first course of chemotherapy. Two more courses followed that. All in
all, I spent 4 months in the hospital. I got out of the hospital in October
with a bodyweight of 180 lbs and I was totally physically and mentally
down.
But working out with weights combined with healthy
food and the right supplements helped me to get back in shape. Shortly
after I left the hospital I went to Zarzis (North Africa). I spent one
month there and went through an intensive training program consisting of
the following daily activities: 30 minutes swimming in the morning, working
out with weights in the afternoon, and 45 minutes of power walking in the
early evening. I also followed a strict diet of eating fish, vegetables
and rice.
I took the following supplements: 5000 mg Vitamin
C, 20 mg Beta Carotene, 1,000 I.U. Vitamin E, 200 mcg Selenium, 60 mg CoEnzyme
Q10, Whey Protein powder and a good multi-mineral-supplement. After four
weeks I had gained 25 lbs, my hair had grown back and I felt good. At that
time I was pretty sure that I had won my fight against the cancer. I had
to go to a monthly medical check-up for the next two years and then every
three months until today. I've been following a strict supplement program
during the last five years and my doctor told me that this is one of the
reasons for my great physical condition. Here is my daily supplement schedule,
most of which consist of Life Enhancement's products:
• Vitamin
C 2000 mg
• Vitamin
E 400 IU
• Beta
Carotene 15 mg
• Selenium 200 mcg
• Co-enzyme
Q1O 30 mg
• Multi-mineral supplement 3 capsules
• DHEA 150
mg
• Saw
palmetto 320 mg
• Melatonin
2 mg
• Creatine
monohydrate 10 g
• Whey protein powder 100 g
• Acetyl glucosamine
1000 mg
• I am also using Life Enhancement's
Synoglide and Personal Radical
Shield.
My motivation to lift weights seriously again came
back during my summer vacation in 1997 while I was visiting a friend in
Philadelphia. He told me about a physical test for American football players.
One part of this test is to max out in the squat with 220 lbs (100 kilos).
I thought that I could try this and I set myself a goal: 100 reps with
220 lbs in the squat. This was in July 1997. Nine months later I was ready
to prove my endurance at a lifting exhibition at the FIBO (biggest fitness
and bodybuilding fair in the world). More than 4000 people watched my attempt.
It took me four minutes and 29 seconds to reach my goal: I squatted 220
lbs (100 kilos) for 100 consecutive, deep reps at a bodyweight of only
226 lbs.
I was very happy that I had reached another goal.
But it was actually not the lift; it was the fact that I had proved to
myself that I am still able to perform at a world-class level after having
cancer. I had also proved that the combination of weight training, healthy
food and the right supplements is one of the most beneficial ways to get
healthy and stay healthy. It has helped me to overcome cancer and it can
help everyone to get in a better physical and mental condition.
